Timotheos Samuel Aktaş , also Metropolitan Mor Timotheos , (born January 1, 1945 in Bekusyone , Tur Abdin ) is an Aramaic Syrian Orthodox Archbishop and Metropolitan of Tur Abdin.

Life

Samuel Aktaş first studied at a Syrian-Aramaic madrasah in Tur Abdin and then worked as a teacher for Syrian language and religion. In 1961 he entered the Syrian Orthodox monastery Mor Gabriel . In 1962 he was ordained a deacon , and in 1964 he made his profession . After the compulsory military service in 1967 he became head of the seminary in Mor Gabriel. From 1969 to 1972 he studied English and theology in the USA.

In 1973 he was elected abbot of the Mor Gabriel Monastery, which had existed since 397, and fundamentally revitalized monastery life. His Holiness Mor Ignatius Zakka I. Iwas , Patriarch of the Syrian Orthodox Church of Antioch, honored him with the Holy Cross in 1980 for his great efforts in the monastery. In recent years, however, the monastery and its abbot have been involved in legal disputes, in the course of which the monastery lost a large part of its property, which led to considerable protests abroad.

After the accidental death of Philoxenos Eliyas Çankaya , he was appointed Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Tur Abdin with the episcopal name Timotheus in 1985. The episcopal ordination on February 10, 1985 as Metropolitan of the Syriac Orthodox Diocese of Tur Abdin was donated to him by His Holiness Mor Ignatius Zakka I. Iwas.

In 1993 he was honored with an award by the Church of Finland for his tireless efforts during the Second Gulf War in 1991 in support of the Iraqi refugees. In 1993 he received honorary theological doctorates from the Collegium Sancti Spiritus and the Diandra University.

Metropolitan Mor Timotheos lives at his bishopric in the monastery of Mor Gabriel.
