Tivoli System Automation

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Tivoli System Automation is a software product from IBM for automating the availability of applications in a computer network  (cluster).

functionality

This software monitors the availability of computers and applications and can automatically ensure a desired state of these so-called resources.

Tivoli System Automation consists of a software component that usually combines several computers into a so-called computer cluster. Computers combined in this way are usually also referred to as nodes. In this network of computers, applications can now usually be started on each of the interconnected nodes, which serves to ensure the reliability of the overall system should one node fail. The second essential component is the so-called "Automation Manager", which monitors the resources and makes decisions on how to react to changes in status.

Resources are defined in so-called guidelines for the "Automation Manager". They are identified by a unique name and, as input to Tivoli System Automation, define how a particular application is started, stopped, and monitored. Once defined, resources are logically grouped in their guidelines and related to one another. This expresses, among other things, that before a certain application abstracted as a resource can be started by the Automation Manager, another resource must first be available.
