Antonio Rodríguez Martínez , called Toño (born December 17, 1979 in Alicante ) is a former Spanish football player who last played for Rayo Vallecano in the Primera División .

Player career

The beginnings

Toño began his career as a football player with Hércules Alicante from his hometown of Alicante . There he was the regular goalkeeper in the Segunda División B 2002/03. Due to good performance, he was signed by Recreativo Huelva from the Segunda División in summer 2003 , where he was to stay for two years before he was bought by the first division club Racing Santander for around 1.2 million euros in early 2005 .

Racing / Recreativo

In his premiere season with the Cantabrians, however, he came only to a single use in the league, which is why he was loaned to his ex-club Recreativo Huelva for the 2005/06 season . There Toño was able to shine again as a reliable support and so he achieved promotion to Spain's elite league with the Andalusians as the sovereign leader of the table. In the following season he returned to Racing, where he became a regular goalkeeper in the second attempt. This season, however, he caused a lot of excitement, since a world-class game was usually followed by one with nasty blunders. Among other things, he let a 30-meter shot by Samuel Eto'o from FC Barcelona through the legs. In the meantime, in 2007/08, all doubts about his ability have disappeared.
