Tobias Richter

Tobias Richter (born April 2, 1953 in Munich ) is a Swiss opera director and theater director .

Life

Tobias Richter is a son of the German conductor and organist Karl Richter . He grew up in Munich and Switzerland.

Richter studied philosophy in Geneva and Zurich and learned the directing trade as personal assistant to Götz Friedrich , then with Jean-Pierre Ponnelle and from 1977 with August Everding at the Bavarian State Opera . In 1980 he brought out his first production in the Marstalltheater . From 1980 he worked as director of the music theater at the Staatstheater Kassel , where he was also acting director for the three-part theater in 1982/83. From 1985 to 1992 he was general director of the Bremen theater and was able to win over Jörg Immendorff , Albert Oehlen and Markus Lüpertz as stage designers for individual productions . From 1996 to 2009 he was general director of the Deutsche Oper am Rhein Düsseldorf / Duisburg and regularly staged here. For the next ten years he directed the Grand Théâtre de Genève .

Internationally, Richter has worked as a director in Strasbourg, Aix-en-Provence and Verona, among others, and at the 2006 Venice Biennale he chaired the jury for contemporary music. Since 1998 he has been teaching at the Robert Schumann University in Düsseldorf. Since 2007 he has been a member of the Academy of Performing Arts .

In 2002 Richter received the French order Chevalier des Arts et des Lettre .
