Tobias Schrödel (born April 22, 1971 in Munich ) is a German IT security specialist , author , speaker and TV expert. Schrödel is known for explaining IT security gaps in a way that laypeople can understand.

Life

Schrödel has completed vocational training as an IT specialist (application development). He gives full-time lectures with live hacking elements and the aim of sensitizing employees and protecting them from hacker attacks. The computer magazine Chip called him " Germany's first comedy hacker " because of his humorous and understandable way of presenting complex, technical processes . Schrödel had this protected as a word mark in 2012 . He is an AdA-certified trainer and has been an honorary examiner for the IHK Munich and Upper Bavaria since 2002 .

Publications and books

In December 2011 Schrödel's first book “ Hacking for Managers ” was published, which was awarded the “ getAbstract International Book Awar d” at the Frankfurt Book Fair . It has been available since 2016, now in its 4th edition, under the new title “ I think it hacks ”.

With “ The digital death ” Schrödel wrote a book about the digital estate in May 2018 . In addition to the technical procedure, he also describes the legal, moral and ethical-philosophical aspects of cracking a deceased young woman's cell phone on behalf of her mother.

With “ It's a nerd's world ”, Schrödel published his first book for young people in June 2019 about the inventors and inventions that made our world digital. The book was awarded the “ EMYS Non-Fiction Prize ” for children's and young adult literature in August 2019 and was recorded as an audio book by Julia Fischer and Peter Veit.

Schrödel writes a weekly column in the Mecklenburger Blitz and his texts appear in a slightly modified form every Monday in his blog “I think it hacks”.

At the age of ten, Schrödel and his brother Thilo Henrik Schrödel were cast by the EIKON production company for the children's mystery series Anderland . He played a leading role from 1981, several supporting roles and is also the child in the opening credits of the series. Other roles as a child actor and on the stage of the Bavarian State Opera followed .

From the turn of the millennium, Schrödel was repeatedly seen as a TV expert for IT security in programs such as WiSo, Akten or Explosiv. In 2011 he was part of the permanent team of experts on the second season of the program “ ErmittlungsAKTE - Dem Verbrechen auf der Spur ” with Ulrich Meyer.

Schrödel has been the exclusive IT and technology expert for the RTL program " stern TV " since 2011 . He has since appeared in over 80 shows. In March 2017, he demonstrated how an attacker can use a smart toy to manipulate children and get them to open the front door. A similar scenario was portrayed on December 2, 2018 in the Munich episode “ We'll get you all ” in the Tatort TV series .

Cryptography

As an expert in historical cryptography, Schrödel managed to crack short Vigenère ciphers in 2007 after around 450 years . His method was published in 2008 in the specialist journal “ Cryptologia ” and integrated into the “ CrypTool ” learning software .

Schrödel collects postcards with cryptography and old books on cryptography. He is the initiator and co-developer of the Cryptobooks website. Parts of his postcard collection were shown in a special exhibition in the Heinz Nixdorf MuseumsForum in summer 2017.
