Jonathan Toby Harris, Baron Harris of Haringey (born October 11, 1953 ) is a British politician and life peer in the House of Lords for the Labor Party .

Live and act

He attended Haberdashers 'Aske's Boys' School and Trinity College , Cambridge, and became President of the Cambridge Union Society . In Cambridge he was a member of the Cambridge University Liberal Club .

He was a councilor and head of Haringey Borough Council and chairman of the Association of London Government . He was promoted to Life Peer in 1988 as Baron Harris of Haringey , of Hornsey in the London Borough of Haringey. He was a Haringey city councilor for 24 years and retired in 2002, two years after being elected to the London Assembly for Brent and Harrow in 2000 .

As head of Haringey Council, his job was to deal with a multi-million pound increase in the cost of the restoration of Alexandra Palace , led by Bernie Grant , the trust of which the council is running on behalf of the people of London. In 1991 he did not accept the decision of the Attorney-General that the politically embarrassing additional expenses were illegal and therefore could not be charged to the foundation. Instead, he argued that the Foundation owed the Council £ 30 million including compound interest, and tried to sell the entire palace, an approach his successors still pursue despite the High Court banning it in 2007.

One of the criticisms during his tenure was the high spending he approved of his counterparts. Over the course of a year, Cllr Harris spent over £ 24,000 including over £ 15,000 on taxi rides. The auditor admitted that this was not incorrect, but criticized the fact that the system in place meant that senior executives were never billed for minor expenses and thus never checked what was billed to the council.
