Daughter card

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

As Daughter card (German: Daughter Board ; also daughterboard or mezzanine board ) - the Germans daughter board or mezzanine board - are special expansion cards or adapters referred, whose function is, hardware an existing peripherals in the "mother-daughter" principle to expand. They are not to be confused with conventional plug-in cards, which function as an independent unit.

Special AGP digital display (ADD) cards are an example. They are used to inexpensively expand an onboard graphics chip located on the mainboard with an additional monitor connection, without having to install an expensive graphics card with its own chipset . In this case, AGP slots are usually used on such mainboards, which only allow the use of AGP daughter cards and are marked with "for flat panel daughter cards or ADD cards only". The onboard graphics processor (mother) and the ADD card (daughter) are now operated as a common unit in the overall system. In this case, it should be noted that the ADD daughter card does not have any performance advantages for the system, as it only has the components that are used on conventional graphics cards for the second monitor connection.
