Toghchi district

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Toghji district ( Persian محله طوقچی Mahalle je Toghtschi , IPA : mæhællɛ jɛ toɢt͡ʃi ) is a district in the north of Isfahan with ancient origins. Before the Islamization of the Persian Empire , the area was outside the city near the Jahudije Gate. After the Arab invasion ofthe Persian Empire and during the conquest of Isfahan, some of the fallen soldiers of the Islamic army were buried in this area. During the rule of the Buyid dynasty, Toqchi expanded within its fortifications and built a gate west of the neighborhood's cemetery. Over time, the cemetery was enlarged and well-known personalities were buried, especially in the 9th and 10th centuries. The cemetery is the second largest in Isfahan after the Tacht-e-Fulad cemetery.
