Toki is a Jump 'n' Run - arcade game , which by the company TAD Corporation developed and published 1989th In Japan the game was marketed under the name JuJu Densetsu . Marketing in the USA was taken over by Fabtek .

Backstory

In the animated intro of the game you can see "Miho", Toki's friend, being kidnapped by a magician named "Vookimedlo". The main character Toki tries to prevent him and is then transformed into a chimpanzee by him.

Game flow

The player controls a monkey and tries to complete six levels . He can defend himself against the numerous opponents by spitting and jumping. Spitting is the monkey's main attack. Similar to the game Super Mario , jumps can be used in addition to dodging to land on opponents and thus throw them out of the game. From time to time, turned off opponents leave power-ups behind . The majority represent improvements in the monkey's ability to spit. Examples are a double shot or the ability to spit fire. A football helmet that acts as a protective shield and trainers that enable the player to jump higher can also be collected.

At the end of a level there is a fight against a boss . The player can lose life through collisions with opponents, projectiles or traps, as well as through the expiry of a time limit displayed on the screen . At the start of the game, it has three lives.

Ports

Toki was released in 1991 on the Amiga , Atari ST , C64 , Sega Mega Drive , Atari Lynx and NES systems . The porting to home computers was done by Ocean . The NES version was developed by Taito . Lynx and Mega-Drive conversions were released by the software departments of the manufacturers themselves. The SEGA version has a partly heavily modified level structure.

A new version is announced by the GGP group for 2018.

On June 17, 2019, Microïds released a completely revised version of the game for the Xbox One under the name TOKI Juju Densetsu , which can be purchased from the Microsoft Store as a 540 megabyte download. The game is also available for Nintendo Switch , Windows and PlayStation 4 .

criticism

In the press, the almost true-to-original implementation of the machine on the 16-bit computer systems was particularly praised. The Amiga Joker writes : "With Ocean's latest prank, however, there is almost confusion: Automat or Amiga?" (Amiga Joker, issue 10/1991)
