The tokomairiro river is a river in the region Otago on the South Island of New Zealand . It runs for a little more than 50 km in a south-easterly direction and reaches the Pacific at Toko Mouth , 50 kilometers south of Dunedin .
The second largest city in the Otago region, Milton , lies in the flood plain of the Tokomairiro. Two main branches of the river span the city from the south and north.
The name of the river comes from the Māori language and means place where the canoes have to be pounded . This may refer to the usual mode of locomotion in swamp areas, where the usual paddles could not be used.
The river is prone to flooding in the rainy months of August to October, so many companies have surrounded their premises with high concrete walls to avoid the annual flood damage.
