The customs post in Arnsberg

The Tollpöstchen also Tollpöstken (= Zollpöstchen) is a historical customs station in Arnsberg and has probably served as a wayside chapel since the 17th century .

history

The listed building is located below the Schlossberg on the old road to Soest . At this point there was the moat that protected the access to the castle to the north. The ditch was filled in in the 18th century. It is a small cube with a sloping slate roof at the back. The house is protected by an old linden tree, which is a natural monument .

Customs duties were levied there in the Middle Ages until around 1600. This function ended with the transfer of customs duties to the Oleypforte in the city wall.

The building was then converted into a chapel dedicated to Mary . Until 1930 the interior was closed by a door. An open archway has existed since then. The interior has also been redesigned. The entrance is closed by a wrought iron grille in the neo-renaissance style.

For a long time there was a pietà inside . This figure had a special reputation next to the figure of Mary at the town hall . Many foundations were dedicated to the figure.

When the Arnsberg Viaduct below the Wegekapelle was bombed in 1945, the customs post was also badly damaged. A panel painting there and the Madonna were stolen. An apparently worthless crucifix had not disappeared. This late Romanesque , art-historically significant "Arnsberger Cruzifixus" is today in the provost church . The chapel was restored in the same year. As a replacement for the Madonna, a new protective mantle Madonna was made.

The customs post is taken care of by the Arnsberger Heimatbund. In 2001/2002 the house was extensively restored.
