Tomáš Hudeček , (born May 10, 1979 in Olomouc ) is a Czech politician of the TOP 09 party . He was Lord Mayor of Prague from June 20, 2013 to November 26, 2014 .

Career

Hudeček grew up in his hometown Olomouc and graduated from high school in 1997 . Afterwards studied at the natural science faculty of the local university to teach mathematics and geography for the service in the middle school. After graduating, he successfully completed a doctoral degree in social geography and regional development at Charles University in Prague .

Hudeček became politically active in 2009 when he joined the newly founded TOP 09 party. In the local elections in 2010, in which the TOP 09 party in the capital won the most votes, he was elected to the city council of Prague. However, his party initially remained in the opposition because of an alliance between the ODS and the Social Democrats . In November 2011, however, this government coalition broke up and the incumbent Lord Mayor Bohuslav Svoboda (ODS) concluded an alliance with the more powerful TOP 09. Hudeček was appointed to the Czech capital's magistrate as the deputy mayor with responsibility for area planning . Svoboda remained in office.

In May 2013 the alliance between TOP 09 and ODS broke up. On May 23, 2013, the city council voted out the incumbent mayor Svoboda and two other members of the ODS magistrate. Thereupon the remaining members of the ODS also resigned. Hudeček then acted provisionally as Lord Mayor and had to cope with the floods in this role at the beginning of June . On June 18, 2013, TOP 09 and Social Democrats agreed on the tolerance of a minority magistrate of TOP 09 and nominated Hudeček for the position of Lord Mayor. Hudeček was then officially elected as the new Primátor of the Czech capital on June 20, 2013 with 36 of 43 votes cast .

In the local elections on October 10 and 11, 2014, Hudeček was the top candidate for TOP 09 as the incumbent mayor. With 20.07 and 16 out of 65 seats, TOP 09 was only the second strongest behind the first ANO 2011 (22.08% and 17 mandates). A new coalition was then formed in the Prague city council under the leadership of the ANO in 2011, while the TOP 09 went back into the opposition. Adriana Krnáčová became the new mayor in November .
