Tom McNally, Baron McNally , PC (born February 20, 1943 in Blackpool ) is a British politician and the current leader of the Liberal Democrats in the House of Lords and Minister of State in the Justice Department.

Youth and education

McNally was born in Blackpool to an Irish Catholic family. He went to St Joseph's College there . He studied at University College London , where he was elected President of the Debating Club and President of the Students Union.

Professional career

He first worked for the Fabian Society and then was a full-time official of the Labor Party , where he worked as an international secretary. He was political advisor to Secretary of State James Callaghan during the Cyprus conflict before becoming head of the Prime Minister's office when Calghan succeeded Harold Wilson .

Political career

In 1979 he was elected to the House of Commons for the Labor Party . In 1981 he was one of the defectors to the Social Democratic Party . In 1983 he was a candidate for the SDP in the constituency of Stockport , but only achieved third place and left the House of Commons. From 2007 he was president of the Liberal Democrat Party in Stockport. From 1993 he was Head of Public Relations at Shandwick Consultants . On November 18, 1995, his life peer survey was announced. With Letters Patent of December 20, he was raised to life peer as Baron McNally , of Blackpool in the County of Lancashire, and thereby became a member of the House of Lords.

He acted as leader of the Liberal Democrats in the House of Lords from the 2004/05 session as the successor to Shirley Williams, Baroness Williams of Crosby .

In January 2006 he was involved in the resignation of Charles Kennedy with critical comments on his party leadership. McNally criticized Kennedy for being lackluster and boring. In an interview on Jan. 21, he said that he has been addicted to alcohol since the 1980s.

In May 2010, after the formation of the Conservative-Liberal Democratic government, Lord McNally was appointed Minister of State for Justice under Kenneth Clarke .
