Tomasz Mendrek

Tomasz Mendrek (born August 9, 1968 in Český Těšín , also written Tomáš Mendrek) is a former Czech badminton player . Along with Michal Malý and Jan Fröhlich, Mendrek is one of the greatest talents that the Czech badminton sport has produced so far.

Athletic career

In 1985 he won his first national junior title in the ČSSR . He was successful in all three individual disciplines. A year later he repeated this triple success. In the same year he won his first adult title alongside veteran Miroslav Šrámek. In 1988 he won the Czech championships in both mixed and men's doubles. The following year he fought for his first title in men's singles, where he subsequently remained unbeaten until 1997 at the championships in men's singles. He recorded international successes at the open championships in Malta, Cyprus, the ČSFR and the Werner Seelenbinder memorial tournament in the GDR. In 1991 he was third in the final ranking of the European Badminton Circuit . He took part in the European Badminton Championships in 1992 and 1994, and was 9th in the last-named championships. Between these two tournaments, he achieved his best position in the world rankings in 1993 with 36th place. In 1994 he took third place in mixed with Jitka Lacinová at the World University Championship .

After the end of his active career, he began a career as a coach in badminton. He was the trainer of the Austrian junior team, is a member of the "Development Technicians" section, which runs under the direction of the Badminton World Federation and took part in various international trainer activities (IBF World Academy 1998, 1999 and 2002, World Coaches Conference 1997, 1999, 2001 and 2003).
