Tommaso Agudio

Tommaso Agudio (born April 27, 1827 in Malgrate , † January 5, 1893 in Turin ) was an Italian engineer .

Agudio graduated from Pavia in 1849 and went to Paris , where he specialized in engineering and metallurgy. As head of the technical department of the Chemin de fer de l'Est , he took part in the construction of the Paris - Mulhouse railway line. He was the designer of the gun foundry at the Turin Arsenal.

Between 1860 and 1865 he was a member of the Camera dei deputati (Italian Parliament).

Between 1860 and 1870 he developed a funicular system that used an endless rope to move a locomotive called a "tractor". The rope was driven in one of the two end stations and acted on two large pulleys attached to one side of the locomotive, over which it ran twice. The pulleys transmitted the traction energy to a drive roller, around which was in turn looped on a fixed rope between the rails, on which the tractor could pull itself up the mountain.

Test facilities were located in Dusino and between Lanslebourg and the Mont Cenis pass summit, with the latter not being driven on a fixed rope, but in the manner of a rack railway . The system was used regularly on the railway from Sassi to the pilgrimage site of Superga near Turin , with parts of the test route at Mont Cenis being used. The railway remained in operation from 1884 to 1935 and was then converted into a rack railway (see Superga rack railway ).

Since the end of 2007 the name Agudio has been used again.
