Tommi Antero Nikunen (born December 10, 1973 in Kouvola ) is a former Finnish ski jumper and the former coach of the Finnish national team.

Career

Until 1993 he was active as a ski jumper in the Finnish B-team, albeit with little success. From 1998 to 2001 he coached the B-Team of the Finnish Nordic Combined , from 2001 to 2002 he was the ski jumping coach of the A- Team of the Nordic Combined. At the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City , his protégé Samppa Lajunen won 3 gold medals . In 2002, Nikunen replaced Mika Kojonkoski, who was moving to Norway, and became head coach of the Finnish national ski jumping team. Here, too, he achieved many successes u. a. a team silver medal and a single silver medal from his jumper Matti Hautamäki at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin . In addition, with Janne Ahonen he had the best ski jumper of recent years in his squad. Due to its success, the Finnish Ski Jumping Association submitted an offer to Nikunen at the beginning of June 2006 for a further two years, which the latter accepted after a long waiting period. He has not been a Finnish coach since the 2007/2008 season.

Private

Tommi Nikunen studied sports science at the University in Jyväskylä . On July 7, 2007, Nikunen married the Finnish model Miia Lakkisto. The two separated in October 2012.
