Thomas James "Tommy" Wright (born October 21, 1944 in Liverpool ) is a former English football defender who played for Everton throughout his career .
For the English national football team Wright was used 12 times. Wright's first major success with Everton was 1966 when he won the FA Cup against Sheffield Wednesday . A second cup triumph Wright was denied, because he and his team lost the final two years later in 1968 with 1-0 against West Bromwich Albion . In the 1969/70 season Wright won the English championship with Everton, with a margin of nine points.
Wright is not only considered one of the best defenders in club history by Everton fans, but George Best also described Wright as an unpleasant opponent. In the national team, however, Wright was denied the big hit; at the 1970 World Cup in Mexico, England were eliminated 3-2 by Germany. Wright made his debut for England at the European Football Championship in Italy in 1968 against the Soviet Union in the game for third place. Wright eventually ended his career due to injuries.
