Tomu Sione

Sir Tomu Malaefone Sione , GCMG , OBE , (born November 17, 1941 , † April 2016 ) was Governor General of the Pacific State of Tuvalu from 1993–94 .

Member of Parliament

Tomu Sione worked as a journalist from 1962 to 1968. He was elected in the 1974 general election to represent Niutao constituency in the Parliament of the Gilbert and Ellice Islands Colony . After the separation of Tuvalu and Kiribati , he was a member of the Assembly of the Tuvalu Colony.

After independence, Tomu Sione was elected in the August 27, 1977 elections to represent the Niutao constituency in the Tuvalu parliament.

Governor General

Sione was Governor General of Tuvalu from 1993 to 1994, as the representative of Queen Elizabeth II , who is the head of state of Tuvalu.

Later political career

Somewhat unusual for a former governor general who had held this highest office, Sione later runs again for parliament. He was elected by the Niutao constituency and served as Speaker of the Tuvalu Parliament from 1998-2002.

In 2001 he was awarded the Order of St. Michael and St. George ( GCMG ).

Sione lost his seat in the 2002 general election but was re-elected in the 2006 Tuvalu general election and was subsequently appointed chairman of the parliamentary group in the administration of the Prime Minister of Tuvalu Apisai Ielemia .

He represented the constituency of Niutao until the 2010 Tuvalu general election.
