geography

The Tomur Nature Reserve is located in the Aksu Konaxeher (Wensu) district of the Aksu administrative district in the central range of the Tian Shan Mountains, which contain the highest mountains. Several peaks reach heights of 6500 m and more. The core zone of the reserve is 4,000 square kilometers.

The nature reserve is named after the mountain Dschengisch Tschokusu or Tomur ( 7439  m ) lying in it , which is also the highest peak in Xinjiang and the Tian Shan. The second highest mountain in Xinjiang and the Tian Shan, the Khan Tengri ( 7010  m ), is also located in the nature reserve.

fauna

The reserve is one of the largest sanctuaries for the threatened snow leopard in northwest China. In the 1980s, the snow leopard population was estimated to be around 15 animals. The stocks have increased since then. Two surveys in 2004 and 2005 found an estimated 40–65 and 80–130 animals in the reserve, respectively. In addition to the snow leopard, wolves , red foxes , Siberian ibex , argalis , golden eagles , bearded vultures , Altai king chickens and chukar chickens are found.
