Hwang Tong-gyu

Hwang Tong-gyu (born April 9, 1938 in Sukch'ŏn district , P'yŏngan-namdo ) is a South Korean poet .

Life

Hwang Tong-gyu was born as the eldest son of four children of the writer Hwang Sun-won . He grew up near Pyongyang until the family moved to Seoul in 1946 . He belongs to the generation of Koreans who experienced both Japanese colonial rule and the Korean War .

In 1956 he published the cycle of poems Happy Letters , which is still known in Korea, in a school newspaper . In 1957 he began studying at Seoul National University . A year later, at the age of 20, he made his debut in the well-known literary magazine "Zeitgenössische Literatur" (Hyŏndae munhak). In 1966 he was given the opportunity to study at Edinburgh University, and then became a professor at Seoul National University.

Burial on the wind is one of Hwang Tong-gyu's best-known series of poems .

In his early poetry he depicts a certain feeling of longing and expectation through the use of melancholy landscapes, such as B. in October (Si-wol) and Happy Letters (Chŭlgŏun p'yŏnji). He tried to overcome his troubled feelings by accepting his fate. His work Elegy (Piga) is written from the perspective of a wanderer or an outcast to illustrate the conflict between 'ego' and 'reality'. This work marks the author's first foray away from abstraction towards literary exploration of concrete reality. By giving up his previous distancing from reality, he took up as a subject the suffering of people who lead tragic lives. His works Peace Song (Taepyŏngga), Snow in Samnam (Samnam-e naeri-nŭn nun) and Yŏrha ilgi illustrate the use of irony in the poet's narrative voice.
