The Tonteich is a swimming lake in northern Germany in the municipality of Wohltorf . Two thirds of it is leased to the non-profit Sachsenwaldbad Tonteich , which directs its bathing offer to the public, and one third to the private clay pigeon club .
history
From 1875 to 1911, the Friedrichsruher Tonwerke stood on the site . However, that year the brick factory burned down completely and was not rebuilt. For many years the clay pit slowly filled with water.
vegetation
Since the water in the clay pond is very acidic due to the clay mineral , its own vegetation developed, because only a few plants can tolerate such acidic water. The water is also not good for fishing, and there were no mosquitoes for a long time , which made it all the more popular as a bathing pond. You can mainly see dragonflies and tufted ducks there . The acidic water is also the reason why blue-green algae did not form during the two summers of the century , as they require alkaline water.
today
The clay pond is no longer as acidic as it used to be, but the pH value is still very low. However, it is by no means unhealthy to bathe there, the pond is therefore even said to have a healing effect. Its protected location is the reason for its warm water (in summer 20-29 ° C). The public part is supervised by bathing staff during opening hours, and you will find everything there that you would find in an ordinary outdoor pool . In winter, the site is occasionally opened to give local residents the opportunity to ice-skate.
