Tony Buba

Anthony E. "Tony" Buba (* 1944 ) is an American filmmaker . He was best known for documentaries about his hometown Braddock and nearby Pittsburgh .

Life

Tony Buba was born in 1944 as the first child of Edward Buba († 1997) and Angeline Buba (born Gentile ; 1921-2017). His mother and her family had immigrated to the United States from Tursi, Italy, in 1929 . Buba grew up in Braddock , Pennsylvania , along with his younger brother Pasquale "Pat" Buba (1946-2018).

After graduating from high school, Buba joined the United States National Guard and subsequently worked in a steel works. He began studying at the end of the 1960s. In 1971 he received his Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology from Edinboro University . In 1976 he graduated from Ohio University with a Masters of Fine Arts in film studies .

At the same time, the first short documentaries were made, in which he portrayed his hometown Braddock and its inhabitants and dealt with the effects of structural change in the region caused by the steel crisis of the 1970s.

After completing his studies, Buba also produced commercials, image films and television programs. Shortly thereafter, the Buba brothers met horror filmmaker George A. Romero . As a result, Buba was hired for the sound department of some of Romero's films. Together with his brother, he also appeared in two of the director's films: in 1977 as a drug dealer in Martin and in 1978 as a biker in Zombie .

In 1988 Bubba's first feature- length film, Lightning Over Braddock: A Rustbowl Fantasy , was shown in the Panorama program at the 1989 Berlinale and later earned Buba a nomination for Best Debut Film at the 1991 Independent Spirit Awards .

In 1992 he founded his production company Braddock Films . In 1994, No Pets Buba's only feature film was made based on a short story by Jim Daniels.

In 2012, the New York Anthology Film Archives showed a complementary retrospective of Buba's oeuvre as part of the film series “Sometimes Cities: Urban America Beyond NYC”.

He is married to Jan McMannis-Buba and lives in Pittsburgh .
