Tony Da

Tony Da , also Anthony , ( April 1, 1940 ; † February 12, 2008 ) was an American Indian painter , potter , artisan and ceramist .

Life

Tony Da came from a traditional family of artists. His grandfather was the first generation of painters for in San Ilefonso Pueblo belonging Julian Martinez . He first completed an apprenticeship in pottery with his grandmother Maria Martinez . His father Popovi Da taught him painting and ceramic painting. Since the late 1950s, Da has been painting decorative, geometrically stylized and abstract scenes from everyday life of the pueblos in muted tones and at the same time with great precision . He also dealt with Indian mythology. He often uses old Indian symbols or traditional pottery from the Mimbres- Ceramic on. After all, from 1966 onwards it was mainly devoted to ceramic work, which represented a high point of its work with depictions of animals sacred to the Indians, such as bears and turtles .
