Anthony John "Tony" Gray (born June 14, 1942 in Stoke-on-Trent , England ) is a former Welsh rugby union player and coach. He played as a winger .
Gray was used twice in the Welsh national team during the Five Nations 1968 , opponents were England and Scotland . He played for the Newbridge and London Welsh clubs . He led the latter to the English championship as captain in 1972. In 1985 he took over the post of national coach for Wales. At the first World Cup , he reached third place with the selection, the best result in World Cup tournaments for the country to this day. In 1988 he was named European Coach of the Year after Wales won the Triple Crown . After two defeats against New Zealand , his engagement as national coach ended.
