Topolino (magazine)

Topolino (Italian for Mickey Mouse ) was an Italian weekly magazine for Disney and other comics. It was published from 1932 to 1949 and was then superseded by the Topolino libretto , which still exists today.

history

In 1932, the editor Mario Nerbini decided to publish a new weekly magazine for Disney comics. The first edition of Topolino was published on December 31, 1932. It contained the first Italian Disney story by Giove Toppi, in which Mickey is followed by an elephant. However, Nerbini had not bought the rights for Mickey Mouse and so it happened that Emmanuelle (Disney's deputy in Italy) complained and Nerbini renamed the magazine Topo Lino (The Mouse Lino). When Nerbini later bought the rights, he renamed the magazine Topolino again . Floyd Gottfredson's first stories in Topolino can be found in Topolino # 7. Mostly the Sunday pages were published in the Topolino , the daily trips were published in a newspaper.

The Topolino was eight pages and also published non-Disney comics such as Tim Tyler's Luck . In 1935, the Topolino also published Bobo the Elephant , The Caliph's Stone and Pluto, the Racing Dog . In the same year the Mondadori publishing house bought the Topolino . Mondadori's first number was # 137 .

In 1937 Topolino and I tre porcellini , Mondadori's two children's magazines, became Topolino - Grandi avventure . The number of pages changed from eight to 16. A comic by Floyd Gottfredson was always printed on the first page, other American comics such as Tim Tyler's Luck , but also Italian stories such as Saturno contro la Terra , a story by Federico Pedrocchi , in which Rebo (later revisited by him in four fascist stories, drawn by Luciano Bottaro ) made his debut.

In 1938 the Fascist government banned the reproduction of American stories, except those of Disney ( Benito Mussolini's children liked Mickey Mouse). On February 3, 1942, however, Mussolini ordered these American stories to be discontinued as well. Mickey Mouse has been replaced by Tuffolino , a character very similar to Mickey. Tuffolino made his debut in Tuffolino agente di pubblicità , a remake of the American story Mickey Mouse, super salesman . Tuffolino and his friends (Mimma and Clara) were very much like Mickey and his friends (Minni and Klarabella). Tuffolino's stories were written by Pedrocchi and drawn by Pier Lorenzo De Vita . In December 1943, Mondadori had to stop all issues.

In December 1945 Mondadori started producing Topolino again. Because of the fall of the fascists all over Europe except Spain, Gottfredson stories could now be reprinted again. In 1949 the chief editor Mario Gentilini decided to convert the magazine into a paperback. The last edition of the Topolino was the # 738; on April 10, 1949, the first edition of the Topolino libretto was published.
