Gate entrance to the nursery of Islay House

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The gateway to the nursery at Islay House is west of the Scottish town of Bridgend on the Hebridean island of Islay . It is just off the A847 which connects Bridgend with Port Charlotte and Portnahaven . Opposite is the West Lodge , the gardener's former home. The gate entrance is on the extensive grounds of Islay House , about 250 m southeast of Islay House itself. On August 28, 1980, the building was included in the Scottish List of Monuments in Category C.

description

The origin of the gate entrance is not recorded. However, it can be assumed that it was built at the same time as the West Lodge and the nursery, i.e. at the beginning of the 19th century. The building is constructed symmetrically and begins with two pillars on square areas that are directly on the A847. Low concave walls lead from there to the driveway behind and end there at two round pillars. These are juxtaposed with two other pillars of the same design, but smaller in size. The footpaths lead to the site between the first pair of pillars, while the latter pair of pillars delimits the entrance for vehicles. The entire structure is plastered and whitewashed. All pillars end with decorative spheres.
