Town Hall (Bowmore)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Town Hall is the only building with a hipped roof to the left of the center of the picture.

The Town Hall in Bowmore , the capital of the Scottish Hebridean island of Islay , is the former town hall of the village. It is located on Main Street , where the A846 runs through Bowmore, not far from Kilarrow Parish Church . Over the years, the library and a police station were also housed in the building. Then the Freemasons use it as a meeting place. The Town Hall is currently no longer in use. On July 20, 1971, the building was added to the Scottish List of Monuments in Category B. During a visit in 2009, the condition of the building was rated as poor and the increasing deterioration of the substance as a result of the vacancy was pointed out.

description

The exact time of construction of the building has not been handed down, so that only the later 18th century can be given as the construction period. It is one of the early buildings of the planned city founded around 1770 and is built in the Georgian style . The two-story, free-standing building is entered via a door set in the middle of the front, which is framed by two pilasters that support a semicircle. Therefore five lattice windows are arranged symmetrically . The building ends with a slate-covered hip roof .
