Torfkähne Bremen is a "living" open-air museum in the Bremen district of Findorff . Rides are offered with replicas of historical peat barges from the Teufelsmoor area . In self-made costumes that are true to the original, the performers present history and stories about the background of peat extraction in the Bremen area during the boat trips.

As a project of the labor market policy service provider bras eV - work for bremen , the Bremen peat barges have been in operation since summer 2007.

background

In addition to the lively communication of local history, the main focus of this museum project is on imparting knowledge and skills to the performers in a variety of areas. The actors were all long-term unemployed , i.e. for more than a year without employment . The Torfkähne Bremen project tries to counteract this development by giving the performers new self-confidence ; be it by playing at the berth in the peat harbor and during the boat trips, with smaller craft and repair work, in administration or in public relations . The long-term unemployed learn about the exhibition content and the associated historical context in individual and group training. In close cooperation with a travel organizer and experienced skippers who learn measure participants to organize Torfkahnfahrten and perform. In addition, their acting skills are developed and trained. These lessons are led by trained staff from the tourism and acting sector .

The employment project is mainly financed by public funds from the State of Bremen , the federal government and the European Social Fund .

Peat barge trips

From the peat harbor in Bremen-Findorff (district Findorff-Bürgerweide ), the peat barges set off on their historic journeys over the ditches and canals between Bremer Blockland and Teufelsmoor . Already on land, the passenger is greeted by historically costumed actors who meet him as Jürgen Christian Findorff or as a moor farmer from the time of the moor colonization . During the excursions, the actors report on the hard struggle of the people against the water of the boggy wetland areas for the reclamation of land for settlements and agriculture from the middle of the 18th century.
