Toribio Rodríguez de Mendoza (* 1750 in Chachapoyas , Peru , † June 10, 1825 in Lima , Peru) was a pioneer of Peruvian independence. He was an ordained priest and lawyer .

Rodríguez studied at the San Carlos and San Marcelo seminar in Trujillo and then at the Santo Toribio seminar in Lima. He obtained his doctorate in theology at the University of San Marcos in Lima in 1770. When the “Real Convictorio de San Carlos” was founded in 1771, he was appointed professor of philosophy and theology. He was ordained a priest and appointed a lawyer.

Research objects

During his time at the Convictorio he intensified the study of natural sciences and mathematics and advocated the expansion of the subjects.

In addition, Toribio Rodríguez de Mendoza was a member of the "Sociedad Academica Amantes del País" (Academic Community of Lovers of the Land), which published the magazine El Mercurio Peruano twice a week between 1790 and 1795 . In addition to philosophy, this magazine dealt with topics such as geography, history, economics and the natural sciences, with a special focus on medicine. The desired effect was to provide education, not only through a large variety of knowledge about Peru itself, but through the general enthusiasm of Peruvians for the natural sciences and modern scientific work.

Peru gained independence in 1821 and it was José de San Martín who elected a constituent congress. This congress, under the President Francisco Xavier de Luna Pizarro (1780–1855) initially consisted of two chambers.

As an MP for Trujillo , he chaired the first Peruvian Constituent Congress ( Congress of the Republic of Peru ) in 1822. Eventually he became Chairman of the Bar Association and Rector of the Universidad Mayor de San Marcos .

Toribio Rodríguez de Mendoza died on June 10, 1825 at the age of 75 in Lima.
