Tornado in the Viersen district on May 16, 2018

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

On May 16, 2018 between 5:50 p.m. and 6 p.m., a tornado hit parts of Boisheim , Schaag , Dilkrath and parts of Niederkrüchten . All of the places mentioned are located a few kilometers from each other in the Viersen district .

It was an F2 / T4 tornado ( Fujita scale & TORRO scale ) (T4 stands for maximum wind speeds between 185 and 220 kilometers per hour). Furthermore, it was a so-called multivortex tornado , which was very impressive due to the dust that was blown up. The approximately 5.4 kilometers long corridor of the tornado measured an average of 120 meters, but was also up to 240 meters wide in places.

A 23-year-old man was hit by falling branches and was treated in hospital. The roofs of some houses were partially covered by the storm. Some streets were temporarily blocked by fallen avenue trees or branches; the road between Boisheim and Brüggen (L 373) was closed at Dilkrath for over a week.

procedure

The tornado formed north of Boisheim and moved south-west directly into the city center, where the first damage in the F1 / T2 area ( Fujita scale & TORRO scale ) occurred on an aisle up to 130 meters wide . After crossing the railroad tracks in the northern part of the city, he continued across the city. In this part, damage was only recorded in the F0 / T1 area; the tornado has weakened briefly in this area. The tornado picked up again when it reached the cemetery on the southwestern outskirts; at this point the thickness F1 / T3 was reached over a width of approx. 200 meters.

The tornado then turned to the south, the aisle remained around 190 meters wide up to the L3. When the tornado crossed the L3, a forest area was almost completely destroyed over at least 240 meters; at this point the tornado reached level F2 / T4. After crossing the L3, the tornado moved back to the southwest, past Heidend and Dilkrath , where damage was caused in the F0 / T1 area at the entrance to the town.

The next 2.2 kilometers of the aisle ran over an open field and without known damage. The last damage was caused by the tornado at the entrance to Amern , where F1 status was achieved. The tornado has probably dissolved a few meters further, here its track is lost.

Others

In Germany there are around 30 to 60 local tornadoes annually.
