Tornedalen
Tornedalen ( Finnish Tornionlaakso ) is a valley in Northern Europe through which the Torne älv flows. The term is also often used to designate the cultural region, which is characterized by multilingualism and - regardless of today's membership of two states - has a common history. Tornedalen is a European region .
In the settlements here, the languages Finnish , Swedish , North Sami and Meänkieli are spoken, which have official status here. In the Swedish part, every resident has the right to communicate with public institutions in one of these languages.
The whole valley was originally part of the historic Swedish province of Lapland and Norrbotten until the left bank became Russian territory together with Finland in 1809 . Many places in the region had residential areas on either side of the river and were separated. However, some settlements still have a common name today. Other similarities, such as the similar preparation of dishes, have been preserved to this day.
