Ketani Association

The Ketani association is an Austrian association for Roma and Sinti . It was founded in 1998 by Gitta Martl and her brother Albert Kugler in Linz .

Many Sinti and Roma no longer had any documents after the Second World War . Since they often could not read or write, it was difficult for them to deal with the authorities on their own. The Ketani association formed an interest group for the Roma minority in Austria, who have lived in Austria for centuries . One of the tasks of the association is to look after and support its members by providing assistance with applications, looking for accommodation and training.

The association also looks after Roma refugees , mostly from ex-Yugoslavia , who are suffering from the aftermath of the war.

He represents the interests of the Roma in public through interviews, radio broadcasts, television recordings and the publication of articles on special topics such as the fate of Roma women in Upper Austria . Another area of ​​responsibility was the care of surrounding campsites and, above all, advice on the design and planning of new parking spaces for Roma, e. B. in Braunau am Inn in cooperation with Mayor Gerhard Skiba and the Association for Contemporary History .

In 2001 the Ketani association took part in the 10th Braunau Contemporary History Days organized by Andreas Maislinger on the subject of "Distorted Perception" - the image and reality of the Roma and Sinti in the 20th century . In 2006 the association produced the film Ketani is called together with the ORF regional studio Upper Austria . Sinti realities instead of gypsy clichés by Ludwig Laher .

In addition to the many cultural projects that are carried out every year, the association's employees hold lectures on Roma in Austria upon invitation and report on their own experiences as members of the minority. The organization and participation in commemorative events for the victims of the Nazi regime , such as B. Maxglan , Mauthausen and Lackenbach . At the end of 2005 the soccer team "Ketani Kickers" was founded. Under the direction of Sintiza and artist Melanie Kreuzhof, an oversized football was designed, which was artistically painted by the Ketani Kickers and members of the Ketani Association. This soccer ball was exhibited in a Linz museum in spring 2008 and then auctioned. The net proceeds of this project went to the Ketani Kickers.

The association organizes a monthly broadcast on Radio FRO in Linz. In these programs interesting personalities are presented, Sinti and Roma music played and current events and projects of the Ketani association are discussed.

The association has been managed since May 2005 by Nicole Sevik, the daughter of the founder of the association Ketani Gitta Martl. Gitta Martl and the chairman and trainer of the Ketani Kickers Renaldo Horvath actively support them.
