features

Torpedo andersoni has the typical, somewhat wider than long disc shape of its family, consisting of body and pectoral fins, whereby the disc slightly covers a pair of anal fins, as well as a short, thick tail and two dorsal fins lying one behind the other, the front being larger than the rear. The top is yellowish with red-brown spots, the underside creamy white. It has wart-like appendages (papillae) around the injection holes . The type specimens had lengths of 22 and 16 cm.

Like other electric rays, Torpedo andersoni is ovoviviparous . The young hatch in the body of the mother or shortly after the oviposition. In the uterus, the embryos first feed on the egg yolk, then on a slimy fluid that is secreted from the uterus and enriched with fat and proteins.
