The Torre Velasca is a striking skyscraper in Milan south of the cathedral . The building designed by BBPR is located in Piazza Velasca, named after Juan Fernández de Velasco , a Spanish governor of the Duchy of Milan in the 17th century. The planning of the high-rise building for the center of Milan, which was devastated by Allied bombing in 1943 , began in 1950, but the controversial building was not realized until 1956–1957. The construction time was 292 days, eight less than contractually agreed.

The lower 18 floors contain shops and offices, while the upper floors of the mushroom-shaped cross-section contain apartments. The protruding shape cites the Torre del Filarete of Castello Sforzesco .

In 2011 the Soprintendenza per i Beni Culturali placed the high-rise under a preservation order.
