District view with tower

The Torre de Noriega is a tower in the Mediavilla district of Noriega in the municipality of Ribadedeva , Asturias , Spain and dominates the entire center and its area of influence from a moderate height. Various buildings are currently connected to it, so that only the north wall has been completely cleared.

The construction is rectangular in plan and measures 6.50 by 7.40 meters at the base at a height of 11.65 meters, which are divided into four heights and end with battlements . It is likely that the tower had a hipped roof at some point . The walls are made of ashlars so that the carved stone is left for the lintels and the connection of the walls. These walls decrease in wall thickness with increasing height.

The outer openings are located in the middle of the façades, and the use of four triple-lobed windows distinguishes this tower, a solution that cannot be found in any other Asturian tower. Also noteworthy is the lack of loopholes , which leads to the assumption that the end use of the tower was viewed more as a show of power within the territorial administration and had no function as a watchtower for military use.

Torre de Noriega is privately owned and is inventoried as a first-order monument in the region and as an architectural heritage of Asturias.

It is not possible to give the exact construction date that had a drawbridge and a moat. A possible chronology of the late 14th or early 15th century is being considered, with the buildings surrounding the north, as well as the chapel on the west side and the house built on the south being more modern.
