from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Torrontés Sanjuanino is a white wine variety that is widespread in the states of Argentina, Chile and Peru.

A study published in 2003 by the Institute Department of Viticulture and Enology, University of California, Davis and Facultad de Ciencias Agrarias, Universidad Nacional de Cuyo, Mendoza, Argentina suggests that the Torrontés Sanjuanino is a natural cross of the grape varieties Criolla Chica x Muscat d'Alexandrie is. The same applies to the Torrontés Riojano and Moscatel Amarillo varieties . Torrontés Mendocino was created by crossing Muscat d'Alexandrie with a previously unknown variety. However, there are also suspicions that they are related to the Spanish TorrontésIs related; confirmation is still pending. In Argentina alone, the area under vines was around 4,850 hectares in 1999.

The Torrontés Sanjuanino produces acidic wines with an aromatic taste - similar to muscatel.

The Pisco brandy is distilled in Chile from Torrontés Riojano and Torrontés Sanjuanino (locally called Moscatel de Austria) . It is also grown in Brazil grape variety called Torrontés and also Turrundos. It is not known whether it is related to the other grape varieties.
