Torson di Sotto is an approximately 1000 m² island in the central lagoon of Venice , more precisely in the Valle Millecampi , an area known nationwide for birds and insects, which can be reached via the Canale di Piovego.

Archaeological and geological studies were also carried out there. In the late 1970s, for example, a drill core 3.3 m in length was taken that contained peat between 1.3 and 2 m below mean sea level . Pollen analyzes showed that in the epoch that corresponded to this 70 cm thick peat layer, which was once above ground, mainly oaks and alders grew. The lowest layer of the peat layer was created in 1730 ± 80 years BP , the top layer already shows strong traces of brackish water and could be dated to 1140 ± 80 years BP. The layer below 2 m has a brackish character with numerous foraminifera .

Thus, an uplift of the country in relation to the sea level ( regression ) between about 150 and 300 AD in this area with a subsequent decrease ( transgression ) between about 750 and 900 could be proven. Several investigations in the lagoon showed that this phenomenon occurred in the south, but not in the north of the lagoon. Probably some river courses changed in late antiquity and brought more fresh water into the lagoon. Possibly the cause was a climate change.

Torson di Sotto, like the other islands in the lagoon, is threatened by the destruction of the surrounding barene , the salt marshes specific to the Venice lagoon .
