TortoiseSVN (of tortoise [ tɔːtəs ] English : Tortoise, abbreviated tsvn ) is a free client for versioning Service subversion . It is under the GNU General Public License and uses a turtle in its logo.
TortoiseSVN is implemented as a shell extension, it is integrated into the Windows Explorer and can therefore be used outside and independently of an integrated development environment .
The main task of the software is revision and source control version control . A Subversion server is recommended for use, but it is also possible to access repositories locally.
The project was started in 2002 by Tim Kemp as a fork of TortoiseCVS . Sourceforge had more than seven million downloads of the software in August 2008. The developers speak in their blog of over nine million downloads of all packages from the start of the project to April 2008. In 2007, the project won the SourceForge.net 2007 Community Choice Award for Best Tool or Utility for Developers Award.
Range of functions
Tortoise uses Windows Explorer as its graphical interface . An extension of the command list in the context menu serves as a user interface. The status is displayed directly in the Explorer using overlay icons .
TortoiseSVN's management of the working copy is based on the Subversion client program of the appropriate version (for example svn 1.5. * Vs. t svn 1.5. *); so you can switch between the two if necessary.
The software offers several tools for use. Not only can ASCII -based files be compared with the Merge tool , it also supports the comparison of proprietary formats such as. B. that of Word. Changes to image files can be tracked through IDiff. In connection with tracking systems, logs or bug trackers can also be used via the issue tracker.
The software is currently available in 52 languages. Of these, 32 are at least 85% translated.
For version control, complete versioning of directories, atomic transfers, metadata versioning and branching options are available.
TortoiseSVN supports the HTTP , HTTPS , SVN and SVN + SSH protocols . Alternatively, you can work directly with files .
