Tosa Mitsunori ( Japanese 土 佐 光 則 ; born 1583 ; died March 1, 1638 ) was a Japanese painter of the Tosa School during the Momoyama and early Edo periods .

life and work

Tosa Mitsunori was the eldest son (or possibly a disciple) of Tosa Mitsuyoshi . In turn, he was Mitsuoki's father . In his youth he worked in Sakai together with his father as a "city painter" (町 絵 師, Machi e-shi), where he occasionally took on orders from the Kanō school .

In 1636 Mitsunori moved to Kyoto with his son Mitsuoki, but Mitsuoki received the position he sought as head of the painting department of the imperial court only two decades after Mitsunori's death.

Among the few surviving works by Mitsunori is the "Legend of the Taima Mandala" (当 麻 曼荼羅 縁 起, Taima mandara engi), a scroll in the collection of the Noshi family, which he shared with painters of the Kanō school and with priest painters of the Kofuku-ji designed. The style is pretty conservative.
