Toscanelli is an impact crater on the northwestern front of the moon in the plane of Oceanus Procellarum . It is located southwest of the Krieger crater and north of the large Aristarchus ray crater , at the southern end of a groove of the Rimae Aristarchus . The Rupes Toscanelli furrow runs south in a north-south direction .
The crater was officially named by the IAU in 1976 after the Italian doctor, mathematician, astronomer and cartographer Paolo dal Pozzo Toscanelli .
