Death lantern in Cubas

The death lantern (French lanterne des morts ) in Cubas, a district of the French commune Cherveix-Cubas in the Dordogne department in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region , was built in the 13th century. It has been on the list of architectural monuments in France as Monument historique since 1939 .

The structure in the form of a column , which is slightly slender towards the top, stands in the middle of the cemetery. It is made from house stones of different sizes . The lower rectangular opening made it possible to light a lamp, which was then pulled up with a chain to the second, smaller opening.
