The University of Tottori ( Japanese 鳥取 大学 , Tottori daigaku , short: Toridai ( 鳥 大 )) is a state university in Japan . The main campus is in Tottori in Tottori Prefecture .

history

The University of Tottori was founded in 1949 through the merger of the following state schools:

  • Yonago Medical School ( 米 子 医科大学 , Yonago ika daigaku , founded in 1948),
  • the Yonago Medical School ( 米 子 医学 専 門 学校 , Yonago igaku semmon gakkō , founded in 1945; predecessor of the medical school),
  • the Tottori School of Agriculture and Forestry ( 鳥取 農林 専 門 学校 , Totori nōrin semmon gakkō , founded in 1920),
  • the normal school Tottori ( 鳥取 師範学校 , Tottori shihan gakkō , founded 1874), and
  • the normal youth school Tottori ( 鳥取 青年 師範学校 , Tottori his shihan gakkō in Kurayoshi , founded in 1921).

The agricultural and forestry school Tottori, the predecessor of the agricultural faculty, was first called Higher Agricultural School Tottori ( 鳥取 高等 農業 学校 , Tottori kōtō nōgyō gakkō ); the school lacked a degree in forestry. In 1942 she founded the Forestry Department and was renamed the Tottori Higher Agricultural and Forestry School, then in 1944 the Tottori Agricultural and Forestry School. The school had been researching agriculture on sandy soils since 1923, where it opened a test field on the Koyama Dune. The University of Tottori continued the research and in 1951 founded a new test field on the Hamasaka Dune ( Tottori Dune ): today the Research Center for Arid Land (Japanese 鳥取 大学 乾燥 地 研究 セ ン タ ー , English Arid Land Research Center, Tottori University ) .

The University of Tottori was opened with three faculties ( Liberal Arts , Medicine and Agricultural Science). The Faculty of Liberal Arts was renamed the Faculty of Education in 1966, the Faculty of Education and Regional Studies in 1999, and then the Faculty of Regional Studies in 2004 (the teacher training courses moved to Shimane University ). The Technical Faculty was founded in 1965. In 1966, today's Tottori campus was reopened, and the faculties (except medicine) moved to the campus.
