The Tour Brune at Embrun , a French town in the Hautes-Alpes in the region Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur , is a Donjon from the 12th century. The building opposite the cathedral has been a listed monument ( Monument historique ) since 1927 .

history

The tower is a former residential and defense tower of the Archbishops of Embrun . He is the only witness of the fortified complex from the 12th / 13th centuries. Century, which was next to the cathedral of Embrun. The rectangular tower ends with machicolation and battlements . Its name is derived from the old name Tour d'Ambrune . In the course of its history it served as a residential tower, warehouse and prison . In the 17th and 18th centuries, mezzanine floors were built in to create more rooms.

The tower, which has been owned by the city of Embrun since 1934, is 27 meters high. Its walls are 1.80 m thick. In 1927 its roof was converted into a terrace.
