The Bel-Air Tower ( French: Tour de Bel-Air , Tour Bel-Air ) is a high-rise in Lausanne and is considered to be the first skyscraper in Switzerland .

Location and use

The tower is located in the middle of the Center district , between “Rue de Genève”, “Rue des Terraux” and “Place de Bel-Air”. The floor at the level of the “Rue des Terraux” is used as a sales area for various companies . The other parts of the building contain offices , a call center and “le métropole”, a large event hall.

Architecture and buildings

The Swiss architect Alphonse Laverrière designed the building and also planned the construction work, which began in 1929. The tower was completed in 1931 and inaugurated the next year (1932). It was thus the first skyscraper in Switzerland.

The building is from the "de Rue Genève» 68 meters , and from Bel-air space 54 meters high. Counted in floors, the tower has 19 floors from “Rue de Genève” and 15 floors from Bel-Air-Platz.

On the tower there is a twelve meter high mast , which usually carries a Swiss flag.

Since no major renovation work has been carried out since its construction in the 1930s, the tower is to be renovated . Among other things, the access to the building is to be changed, as well as a new building on the ground floor. The planned investments amount to 40 million Swiss francs .

The tower is included in the planning of the city project "2020".
