General

Regulated by Law in India : The position of the national flag among other flags

A higher mast gives a flag a higher status in a group of flags, which is why in most countries, when several national flags are placed next to each other, attention is paid to the same height. Other states prefer their own flag and highlight it with a higher mast. A generally accepted deviation from the equality of height is carried out at award ceremonies for athletes. The national flags are then set at different heights, depending on the placement of the athlete of the respective nation.

The order of the masts for individual flags can also be specified by ordinances. A distinction is made, for example, with flags of international and supranational organizations, such as the European Union or NATO , one's own national flag, other national flags and sub-national flags. Either the middle or the first position from the left (from the point of view of the beholder) is considered a particularly honorable place. In front of the headquarters of the United Nations in New York , the flags of the member countries are placed on masts in alphabetical order (at the same height).

Poles that are attached to buildings at an angle or horizontally are called flagpoles . The same rules regarding arrangement apply to them as to the free-standing masts.

In Germany flagpoles are usually found in front of public buildings . If there are enough masts, they show the flag of Europe , the federal flag , the state flag and the municipal flag from left to right (from the viewer's point of view) in accordance with the applicable regulations . National flags of other states and territories are placed in front of the German federal flag if necessary.

The company flag, occasionally together with the national flag, is often displayed in front of company headquarters. Especially in allotments , private individuals use flagpoles with a wide variety of flags. There are no legal requirements as to who can use a mast.

While there are no special regulations on the coloring of masts in Germany nowadays. B. when the national flag is raised, this was partly regulated differently in the past. At the beginning of the Nazi era , flagpoles were usually made of wood. From 1933 many were painted black, white and red . Due to the weather, the mast often quickly became unsightly, which is why from October 1934 "imperial" flagpoles had to be painted in one color. By order of the Reich Ministry of the Interior of October 26, 1934, it was ordered that masts on buildings should be painted black or gray and on public places, front gardens etc. light gray or white. There is nothing wrong with attaching a black, white and red colored ring under the head as soon as a new coat of paint is required .

Special flagpoles of contemporary history have the status of a protected monument in Germany . These include, for example, the three flagpoles from the times of the GDR in front of the Kulturpalast in Dresden .
