The Maszt Wolności (German: Mast of Freedom ) is a monument in the form of a 60-meter-high and illuminated flagpole in the Warsaw city district of Wola . The construction is the highest flagpole in Poland, and the flag hoisted on it is also the largest in the country with an area of over 100 square meters.

location

The mast stands in the middle of a large, three-lane roundabout intersection where the streets Aleja Jana Pawła II , Ulica Zygmunta Słomińskiego and Ulica Okopowa meet: Rondo Zgrupowania AK Radosław (formerly: Rondo Babka ). The roundabout was renamed in 2011 in memory of a combat unit ("Radosław") of the Polish Home Army during the Warsaw Uprising . The roundabout has a diameter of 100 meters; tram lines cross in the middle, which is why the flagpole is in the northwestern part of the interior of the roundabout. At the roundabout, there are also the Megamall Arkadia and the first residential building in Warsaw with a height above 100 meters ( Babka Tower , built 1999-2001).

history

The mast was erected on the initiative of Polish entrepreneurs Artur Nowakowski and Bogdan Kaczmarek. The building is intended to commemorate important dates in Polish history. Various anniversaries were commemorated: the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of World War I , 70th anniversary of the start of the Warsaw Uprising, 25th anniversary of the establishment of the Third Polish Republic and 10th anniversary of Poland's accession to the European Union .

In November 2012, a support committee was set up to implement the idea. In February 2013, the technical project was presented by the designing architecture studio JSK Architekci . In June 2014, the city issued the building permit and made the necessary building land available. Construction work began on June 23, 2014. For the inauguration ceremony on November 10, 2014, the mayor of Warsaw, Hanna Gronkiewicz-Waltz, was attended by an honorary company of the Polish armed forces .

construction

The construction consists of a vertical mast, on the lower part of which several struts were attached for stiffening. The architects understand these struts symbolically as people who support the flagpole. The mast has the shape of a spindle - bulbous in the middle. The foundation of the construction is V-shaped to accommodate the struts. The nine, 15 meter deep foundation piles have a total length of 128 meters and weigh three tons. On the 58 cubic meter concrete foundation lies a reinforced concrete cap made from 11 tons of steel and another 100 cubic meters of concrete. The steel mast construction weighs around 40 tons. It was manufactured by H. Cegielski SA from Poznań .
