The checkered garter snake ( Thamnophis marcianus ), also known as colorful garter snake or checkerboard snake , is one of almost 40 species of snake in the genus garter snake . It becomes 60 to almost 110 cm long. Males are smaller than females. Like all garter snakes, it is viviparous with litter sizes of up to 30 young. In nature, it prefers amphibians as food , but also eats lizards , earthworms , fish , rodents and small crustaceans .

The checkered garter snake is native to the southwest states of the USA and Mexico to Costa Rica . Their natural occurrence in Guatemala and El Salvador is questionable. In the US state of Kansas their existence is endangered and is under species protection .
