The Touring Sciàdipersia is a sports car from the Milanese coachbuilder Touring Superleggera , whose coupé version is based on the technology of the Maserati GranTurismo . The model name is based on a Maserati classic from the early 1960s. The closed vehicle presented in 2018 was accompanied by a convertible in 2019. A small series of 10 or 15 vehicles has been announced for both versions.

background

Historic model: Maserati 5000 GT "Scià di Persia" with touring body (1959)

Touring Superleggera, founded in 2006, develops design studies for automobiles and produces prototypes. The name of the company refers to the traditional Milanese Carrozzeria Touring , which was active as a design studio and body construction company from 1926 to 1966. There is no legal relationship between Touring Superleggera and Carrozzeria Touring. In its 40-year existence, the historic Carrozzeria Touring has dressed up numerous sports cars that are now considered classics. Touring's customers included the Italian sports car manufacturers, Aston Martin , Bristol and Jensen . A construction method developed in the 1930s by Carrozzeria Touring, in which the aluminum bodies were mounted on a light three-dimensional frame made of profiles of different shapes and thicknesses, is called Superleggera (German: super light).

The newly founded Touring Superleggera has regularly presented sports car studies with model names that are reminiscent of classic Italian sports cars since 2008. These included the Maserati A8GCS (2008) and the Disco Volante (2012), which cited an Alfa Romeo model of the same name (1953).

With the Sciàdipersia presented in 2018, Touring Superleggera continues this tradition. The car is based on a 1959 version of the Maserati 5000 GT . The 5000 GT is a high-performance sports car whose development goes back to Mohammad Reza Pahlavi , the then Shah of Persia . The car delivered to Pahlevi had a body designed by Carrozzeria Touring. It was initially planned as a single piece; Due to the considerable interest shown by international customers, Maserati and Touring built three more, almost identical vehicles in the following months. Later, about 30 units with different bodies were added, most of which were built by Allemano , but to a lesser extent also by Frua , Ghia and other Carrozzieri. The version with the touring body soon received the nickname Scià di Persia (Italian for Shah of Persia) in the automotive literature in order to distinguish it from the other versions. Frua's variant, on the other hand, was referred to as the Maserati 5000 GT Aga Khan with regard to its client Karim Aga Khan IV .

Touring Superleggera's Sciàdipersia Coupé was presented to the public at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2018 . A year later the convertible version appeared in the same place.

Coupe

The Touring Sciàdipersia is technically based on the Maserati GranTurismo, which has been in production since 2007. He takes over the entire drive technology, the cabling and the basic structure of the body from him. In contrast, the externally visible body parts have been completely redesigned. The shape was designed by the Belgian Louis de Fabribeckers , who has been Head of Design at Touring Superleggera since 2007. The new body parts are handcrafted at Touring Superleggera from aluminum sheets, but also partially from plastic.

Following the baseline of the base vehicle designed by Pininfarina , the Sciàdipersia is a coupé with a flat roofline and a hint of a notchback. A special stylistic feature of the front section is a narrow radiator opening that extends over the entire width of the car and is decorated with a horizontal chrome strut on the upper edge. The daytime running lights are embedded in them; at the outer ends are the round headlights. Overall, the front section is described as "nested". The C-pillar is decorated with a wide strip of brushed aluminum that continues over the roof at the top of the rear window. Unlike the other glass surfaces, the rear window has been redesigned. It is curved to the side and cites the rear panoramic window of the Maserati 5000 GT Scià di Persia, but does not reach its dimensions. At the rear end there is a silver decorative element that extends over the entire width of the car. The taillights are embedded in the bumper. The seats and dashboard are also taken from the Maserati GranTurismo. However, Touring Superleggera uses its own upholstery and decoration materials.

The Sciàdipersia is powered by a 4691 cm³ eight-cylinder V-engine with an output of 338 kW (460 hp). The engine taken over from Maserati is not modified.

The dimensions of the Sciàdipersia are largely the same as those of the base vehicle. Only in length does it exceed Maserati's base model by a few centimeters. The weight is 200 kg less than the original Maserati vehicle.

Cabriolet

Sciàdipersia Cabriolet (2019)

The convertible version of the Sciàdipersia appeared in March 2019. Stylistically, it corresponds to the coupé. The technical basis is the Maserati GranCabrio , from which the Sciàdipersia also takes over the fabric roof, the glass sections and the drive technology. However, some details have been revised. This includes the belt line, which, in contrast to Maserati's base model and the Sciàdipersia Coupé, rises slightly.

production

The information on the scope of production varies. Some sources assume that a total of ten copies of the coupé were produced in 2018, others consider the car shown in Geneva in 2018 to be a one-off. For the Cabriolet, Touring announced a production of a total of 15 vehicles in Geneva in 2019. There is no official information on the price of the vehicles.
