The tourism in Abkhazia is an important economic factor in the Caucasus republic that is internationally recognized so far only a few states. At the time of the Soviet Union , Abkhazia, located on the Black Sea , was occasionally known as the “Red Riviera”. After a collapse caused by the Abkhazian civil war in the 1990s, tourism in Abkhazia has been experiencing a revival, especially since 2008. In 2009, one million tourists came to Abkhazia, an increase of 15-20% over the previous year. This positive trend continues. Most of the tourists come from neighboring Russia and states of the former Soviet Union . For travelers from Western Europe or North America, Abkhazia is still largely undeveloped.

The most popular tourist destinations in the country include the beaches in Pizunda , Gudauta and Gagra , the monasteries in Nowy Afon , the capital Sukhum , Lake Riza , the remains of the Great Abkhazian Wall and numerous cultural and architectural monuments spread across the country, the partly from antiquity .

The problems of tourism in Abkhazia include an outdated infrastructure, some of which dates back to the time of the Soviet Union , a security situation that is still tense in some parts of the country, and the fact that Abkhazia is not an independent state, but part of most states worldwide Georgia is recognized. Georgia sees economic activity in Abkhazia as a criminal offense and threatens potential investors in Abkhazia with consequences. Furthermore, Georgia regards the border crossing via Russia as illegal entry into Georgia, so that tourists can expect problems when visiting Georgia later. In recent years, however, there has been massive investment in the Abkhaz tourism industry.
