Tower Mill

Tower Mill is a former watermill in the Scottish town of Hawick in the Scottish Borders Council Area . In 1977 the building was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A.

history

Industrialization marked an important period in Hawick's history. Due to industrial production in the 18th and 19th centuries, the small town achieved the highest economic output per capita of all Scottish burghs . Numerous industrially operated mills drew along the Slitrig Waters . The Tower Mill was built around 1852 by William Elliot & Sons on the site of an older mill. Recyclable stone material was probably reused to build the new mill. In addition to the use of water power, the textile mill was supplemented by a steam engine over the course of the century. The associated chimney on the southeast side was demolished in the 1960s. In 1900 the waterwheel first produced electricity in the town of Hawick. William Elliot & Sons operated the mill until 1950. In 2006 the city restored the Tower Mill and set up a cultural and shopping center. A glass porch on the east side also dates from this time.

description

The Tower Mill in central Hawick is the only mill in Scotland built on a bridge. With a diameter of around 3.7 m, it also probably has the largest preserved waterwheel in southern Scotland. It is visible today through a glass floor. The elongated, three-story building bends at the north end and thus follows the course of the street. Its masonry is made of quarry stone with natural stone surrounds made of yellow sandstone . The east facade is ten axes wide, the west side eight and the south side four. 30-part lattice windows are installed. The building closes with a hipped roof . Inside, simple cast-iron pillars support the wooden floors above.
